Copper flashing is used where there is a heightened possibility of leaks and water damage on a roof, such as at joints, under the eaves or around chimneys and skylights. It would be a shame to install a beautiful copper roof and then finish it off with a cheap plastic or cheap metal flashing. For this reason, we highly recommend copper flashing to complete the stylish look of your copper roof.
There are different types of copper flashing: continuous, step and valley flashing are the most common.
Continuous copper flashing is used where a vertical wall meets a slopes roof. It is generally used around the base of chimneys and skylights.
Step flashing is used where the roof meets sidewalls, like on the sides of a chimney or dormers. It is made up of a series of right-angled copper sheets that are worked into the shingles so that it overlaps the section below it.
Valley copper flashing is used where the roof sections meet. A “W” shaped channel is placed for the water to run down and not pool in the joint.
Drip edges are placed along the edge of the roof, by the eaves to prevent seepage there.
Copper flashing is an essential element to protecting your copper roof.
