Steel roofing is an excellent choice for a metal roof. Steel tends to have a more constant price point than copper, which tends to fluctuate constantly.
As with any metal roof, steel roofing has the benefit of extended warranties, typically thirty to fifty years. The roof will usually last much longer than that. A typical asphalt shingle roof has a life of twelve to twenty years; a wood shake roof has a typical life of twelve years. So while the upfront costs may be more for a steel roof, it is a great investment in that you will not have to replace the roof multiple times.
Maintenance on a steel roof is also considerably less than on a typical shingles house. The compounds in an asphalt shingle tend to break down the moment they are exposed to normal use, whereas the metal roofing does not decompose. The metal roof tends to be sturdier and is not as easily damaged by wind and rain. Snow also tends to melt faster on a metal roof, so ice dams are not as common as with an asphalt shingled house.
For those that are looking to benefit the environment, most steel roofs are made with recycled material and will be able to be recycled once they are done being used for roofing. Asphalt shingles offer no such benefits.
Steel roofing can come in sheets and shingles. The standing seam design is extremely popular in steel. It is easy to install and with some basic instruction can be done by the average homeowner with a little know how and a few basic tools. The tools needed are: metal snips, hammer, screw gun, chalk line, tape measure, caulk gun and pliers. A nice to have tool would be an electric metal shear, but the roofing could also be cut with a circular saw.
